Patricia Kor Leather Handbags in the World, Australia

Souvenirs from Aussie

Back from Australia and ready to take the big Season by storm. Yes, now is shopping madness until the end of December, or at least “window shopping madness”. I want to be prepared for any shopping styles my customer and friends decide to adopt.

I really enjoyed the “back pack” country with its dramatic skies and colorful people. It was a funny feeling to be far away and trapped in a island, big land but island anyway.

Being an a citizen originally from the Southern Hemisphere I felt somehow at home in Australia, same Seasons, similar weather, although I couldn’t see the stars one night to compare with those of my darling Argentina.

One of the things I really regret is not to have learned much about the country and its people before I traveled and being able to be more aware of the local culture. I was unable to recognize its regions, cities ans even neighbors, what a shame! In such case I compared myself to those people that knowing I’m originally from Argentina tell me that they have a friend from “Peru” or “Colombia”… Which means that because I’m from a South American country I should know the people from Peru or Colombia, or that we’re the same. Well, we’re not, we have different culture, traditions, even the Spanish language has its own local twists. My comparison is that I knew little about Australia similar to the person that says his friend is from Peru and I had trouble distinguishing places and people. But I took the time to learn about the country and its people, I visited Museums, national Parks and of course, I went to see “Cosi Fan Tutte” by Mozart at the famous Opera House of Sydney. How wouldn’t I?

There are many things to talk about Australia and a professional travel writer can offer a better report than I do but I have some comments that I would like to share with you.

I went to Australia mainly to see the aboriginal culture, that was the real thing for me there. I was outraged and sadden to know that they’ve had lost their land, their values, their beliefs and or course trust in themselves. By loosing the land they found themselves without the natural resources that allowed them to survive, they replace their original traditions by the Western way, unfortunately they did copy only the shortcomings, so alcohol and junk food replaced their normal diet of fruits and roots. All these produced an existential crisis since the Gods can’t help and don’t serve them anymore. My ignorance was to believe that all these were things of the past, during the era of Colonization and that westerns and locals were integrated and learning from each other. Shame to know that is not and there’s not integration.
So, that was my first impression.

Still interested in the aboriginal culture I spent time looking at the art production of some “countries”, what they call their land.

I love Australian aboriginal art. It is intense, original and unique… like the Patricia Kor handbags! That made a big impact on the Opera House city and even some of them found their home there… nice! I enjoy the detailed drawing structure that it’s involved on their art pieces, specially the dotting technique and lines. I stopped by the Koorie Heritage Trust in Melbourne and rejoiced myself with such environment. Any time I go to an art gallery I ask the manager to go to the back room, there’s where the treasures live. As I thought, there was my favorite piece, an acrylic on canvas painting from Kamahi Djordon King (Jungala). The theme is a dance of women and the piece is called Mimis.

Walking on the streets of Sydney and Melbourne is walking among architectural masterpieces. The shapes, lengths, directions and colors of the structures are there to provoke you. Everything is tasteful planned and looking at the future, actually the future has already arrived in those Australian cities.

The country side is more relaxed and absolutely desolate. That reminded me of Argentina, where you can drive for hundreds of miles and don’t see a soul. As well as AR, Australia is pure scenery, every piece of Nature is a masterpiece and conserved in its original state.

I decided to take a tour to the Blue Mountains, about 90 min. form Sydney and visit the “Three Sister” pick. Great and easy outing, you also have the chance to walk down in the valley in a rich forest.
In Melbourne one of the best routes is the Great Ocean Road which takes you all alongside the hilly coast to one of the southernmost points of the island, with postcard views all the way.

Being myself a city girl I enjoy more cultural activities than backpacking and Australia is a backpacking country although I’ve enjoyed it very much.

Now I know, next time I go first I do my homework and learn more about the culture, then I grab a backpack and rent a van and finally I enjoy and relax in my adventure.

Thanks Aussie! I’ll be back…
